Wildlife and the Environment
We are dedicated to conserving the countryside. We particpate in the Countryside Stewardship, Entry Level and Organic Entry Level schemes, which are all aimed at increasing the number of wildlife species on the farms. Within these environmental schemes we have grass margins, cultivated margins, overwintered stubbles, stubbles followed by spring / summer fallow, beetle banks, pollen and nectar and wild bird cover mixes to name but a few. All these measures are designed to provide habitats on the farm for many different species. |

Staff and Resourcing
At Russell Smith Farms we highly value the contribution a skilled workforce makes. Over the past 15 years the size of the workforce has increased from 3 full time staff to 8 full time and 1 part time member staff. The number of seasonal staff has also increased to around 20 during the summer months. Seasonal staff are sourced through Concordia YSV Ltd, a charity who specialise in providing work placements for students.

Cropping
The change from cereal to root crops in the late 80’s was made possible by investment in irrigation. This, in conjunction with the light easy working soils is ideal for growing good quality root crops. Reservoirs have been laid to carry water to areas of our farm and land rented from neighbours, which had not previously grown vegetables.
The cropping for 2004 was as follows:
Conventional: Potatoes Onions Sugar Beet Winter Wheat
Organic: Potatoes Onions Parsnips |
